Devotionals I Love
A new New Life member recently asked me for devotional recommendations, and I started a list. It was a fun list to make, and I'm sharing it here for anyone else who might be interested! Thanks, Claire!
Devotionals I Love:
Sabbath by Wayne Muller - audio and book versions
I re-listen and re-read this often. A great series of reflections on making room for sabbath in modern life.
Praying with Teresa of Ávila by Rosemary Broughton, Companions for the Journey series
I like this so much I also plan to try others in this series.
The Healer’s Tree: A Bible-basd resource on ecology, peace & justice by Annie Heppenstall
From the Iona community - lovely.
The Wisdom of the Desert by Thomas Merton
Excellent excerpts of the writings of the Desert Fathers
Meister Eckhardt, From Whom God Hid Nothing
Eckhardt can be dense reading, and this introductory collection is really readable and helpful.
The Daily Reader for Contemplative Living by Stephanie Iachetta
This is read often at Centering Prayer gatherings and always hits home.
Can You Drink the Cup? by Henri Nouwen
Uses Jesus’ question and the eucharistic cup as a metaphor for the parts of the spiritual life. (There is also an audio version of this, but I have not read it.)
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
The classic of Bonhoeffer’s writings: how to live as a disciple of Jesus. A little scholarly - brilliant, more clearly written in some sections than others.
