Bible study has a strong tradition in the Lutheran Church, and a strong tradition at New Life. Studying the Bible together is a core part of what we do: reading and wrestling with the word of God together. It is part of what Jesus did with his disciples, so we can follow him by literally following what he did while walking the hills of Galilee and streets of Jerusalem with his friends. We read together, we try to discern what this word —which is not just a story of long ago, but, we believe a living Word- means for us today, in this particular time and place. I believe this work has to be done in community. Individual Bible study is important, too. But the work of being in community is the work of disciples - forming community around a practice of discussing scripture together. I believe Jesus calls us to this work.
I’m excited about our plans for Bible study this year at New Life. I’ll write more about our plans for youth and hands-on Sunday morning Bible study, and our plans for Godly Play this year. Below find our schedule for adult Sunday Bible study at New Life. It is going to be great - come and engage!
There are two other weekly opportunities to engage in Bible study as well - on Thursdays. Both will resume after a summer break on August 24. Thursday mornings at 10 AM, we have “Coffee in the Community Bible Study” - we are going to pick up our read-and-study-through-the-Bible where we left off in the book of Numbers. You do not need to have started with us—you can join anytime. It is so important for us to read the Hebrew Bible: these are the scriptures Jesus and his followers knew and discussed. Jesus assumes a familiarity with these stories and ideas among his hearers. “Coffee in the Community” rotates locations at different area coffee shops - stay tuned for our August spot. We often have friends from the community and other churches join us for this study, so feel free to invite friends.
On Thursday evenings at 6:15 pm, we meet at the Mercer Street Dance Hall for “Word & Wine Bible Study.” Wine drinking is not required! But as with our witness in the coffee shops, we want to be out in the community, showing people that Bible study can be open and fun. In this study, we look at the
