Holy Trinity, Holy Youth

baby blessing - Holy Trinity Sunday 2016

This week we celebrated several New Life youth for different milestones. They chose verses that describe where they are on their paths right now—with faith, with this faith community, and in their journey to adulthood. And in those verses we find understanding of the nature of God. And we celebrated our relationship with them on Holy Trinity Sunday: we are made for each other, we are part of of each other. Wherever they go, our prayers go with them. Wherever they go, God goes with them. We see God in them. And we give thanks to God for them.

We also blessed a baby who is arriving soon. We look forward to choosing new verses and many new milestones with him.

2016 Graduates

Jessica’s chosen verse for Sunday was:

Indeed I know that this is so; but how can a mortal be just before God? Job 9:2

So wise for her years. She said, “Humans don’t always know what’s right or wrong or, if they do, are not always able to act on that knowledge. Most information we have today comes from imperfect sources; it’s hard to know what to trust.”

Miguel chose:

Jesus said to him, “If you are able!—All things can be done for the one who believes.” Mark 9:23

He is facing this next phase of his life with courage, He said, “This verse reminds me that if I believe it, it’s possible.”

2016 God & Church Badge Recipients

Jacob chose this verse:

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

Community service is important to Jacob: he is a true child of New Life. He said, ”This verse encourages public service, stating that you may never truly grow tired of it and you will be rewarded greatly if you unfalteringly assist the church, the community, and the world.”

2016 Confirmands

Markus chose for his confirmation verse:

The Lord passed before him, and proclaimed,

“The Lord, the Lord,

a God merciful and gracious,

slow to anger,

and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…” Exodus 34:6

Markus likes the face of God we see here—chilled, laid back, nice. Markus said, “God doesn't get offended easily and is not overly vengeful and is very forgiving.”

George, like Miguel, chose a verse of encouragement, this one from one of Paul’s letters:

I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

George said, “This will remind me how I will achieve my goals in life and help me through challenges in life.”

2016 Youth/Young Adults Affirming Baptism

Three young people will affirmed their baptisms for other reasons Sunday. Affirmations of baptism can happen at many different occasions in the life of a faith community. It is a time to affirm those promises, to remember who we are as God’s people, and to celebrate that.

Michael went through confirmation formally last year. But he, like all of us, continues to learn. His familiar confirmation verse was a reminder that fear is not who we really are:

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,

I fear no evil;

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff—

they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

He said, that even when he does crazy things, he is usually not afraid. And he reminds himself and us, that “It’s OK when everyone is against me.”

Ione is affirmed her baptism Sunday as a celebration of finding a faith home here at New Life. Ione chose a lovely piece of poetry, a poem of creation and of God’s comfort:

If I take the wings of the morning

and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead me,

and your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139:9-10

Mikaela also celebrated her finding of this faith community—her first chosen church as an adult. She chose the verse:

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

Which she says is “A constant reminder that God gives us a gift of eternal life. We do not have to work for God’s generous gift. A sense of comfort knowing that God never shuts his door(s) on anyone.”
